It was clear from an early age that Josh Hoey had was it took to be a record setter. As a high school senior, Josh ran 1:47.67 to set a new US national high school indoor record, which would stand for the next seven years. Later that year, Josh won the USATF U20 National title at 800m and represented Team USA at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, where he qualified for the semi-finals.
After several seasons of battling injuring and struggling to find the best training situation for himself, Josh began 2024 under the tutelage of former Australian middle-distance runner Justin Rinaldi and the difference was clear from the start. At the 2024 USATF Indoor Championships, Josh finished third, his highest placing in a senior national championships and just one spot out from advancing to the World Championships. Later that summer, Josh set a number of new personal bests, including a 1:44.12 clocking to finish fourth in the final of the 800m at the US Olympic Trials. Josh wrapped up his remarkably successful 2024 campaign with another lifetime best of 1:43.80 for 800m in Belgium and a runner-up finish at the famed Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City.
Picking right up where he left off, Josh’s first race of 2025 saw him demolish the US indoor record for 1000m, running 2:14.48 to become the second-fastest man in history. Two weeks later, Josh won the 1500m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, just missing the US record, and six days after that, won the 800m at the Millrose Games in 1:43.90, breaking the US indoor record. Capping off his domestic indoor season, Josh ran away with the national title at the USATF Indoor Championships in New York, winning the 800m in 1:43.24, breaking his own new US record and making himself the second-fastest man in world history.
Josh’s most frequent training partners are his older brother, Jaxson, and his younger brother, Jonah. When he’s not training and racing, Josh can be found enjoying time with his family, is an avid Pokeman fan and is active in his local churches, both his training bases in Pennsylvania and Flagstaff.
